North Carolina is home to one of the largest veteran populations in the nation. Many veterans live with service-connected injuries, and many more simply reach an age where the stairs at home become difficult. The Department of Veterans Affairs has programs intended to help eligible veterans adapt their homes.
The kinds of help that exist
- Housing adaptation grants. For veterans with certain serious service-connected disabilities, to build or modify a home for accessibility.
- Home improvement and structural alteration benefits. For medically necessary changes to a veteran’s home, available in some cases for conditions that are not service connected.
- Equipment through VA health care. A VA clinician may prescribe certain mobility equipment.
Each has its own eligibility rules and limits, and they change over time. The VA is the only source for what applies to you.
Where to begin
- Talk to your VA primary care team or a VA occupational therapist
- Contact a county Veterans Service Officer, who can help with applications at no charge
- Ask a recognized veterans service organization for assistance
What you will usually need
- A medical recommendation or prescription for the modification
- A written, itemized quote from a contractor or supplier
- Approval before the work is done. Do not start first and hope to be repaid.
Modifications veterans commonly ask about
- Stair lifts
- Wheelchair and platform lifts
- Home elevators
- Ramps, widened doorways and accessible bathrooms
Other possible sources
- State veterans programs
- Nonprofits that carry out home modifications for veterans
- Medicaid waiver programs, for those who qualify
