In North Carolina a great deal of stair climbing happens outside. A front porch four steps above the walk. A deck off the back of a mountain home. And on the coast, the long exterior staircase that is the only way into a house on pilings. An outdoor stair lift is designed for all of them.
How it works
A rail runs alongside the steps. A weatherproof chair travels on it under battery power. You sit, fasten the belt and hold the control until you arrive.
Beach house stairs
The exterior stairs of a raised home usually climb a full story, often with a landing and a turn halfway.
- A straight flight takes a standard outdoor rail
- A landing with a turn calls for a custom rail or two lifts
- The stair structure is checked to make sure it can carry the rail
Porch and deck steps
Short runs are quick to equip and make a big difference to someone unsteady on their feet.
Made for the elements
- Corrosion-resistant metalwork
- Sealed electrical parts
- Seat materials that tolerate sun and rain
- A fitted cover
- A key lock
Care on the coast
- Rinse the rail with fresh water to remove salt
- Keep sand off the rail and out of the carriage
- Keep the cover on
- Have it serviced each year, ideally before the season
- Ask what to do with the chair before a major storm
Who it is for
Someone who can walk short distances and sit safely. If a wheelchair needs to go up, a platform lift or a home elevator is required.
